Services Asbestos Removal
Asbestos Removal
Certified testing and removal, so an older house can be opened up safely.
Asbestos removal, step by step
How we run this job.
Seven steps, with certified testing before anything is touched and the work area sealed off until it's cleared.
-
Quote in writing
We look at what your renovation will disturb and quote the testing, and the removal if it's needed, in writing.
-
Permits pulled
We file any notice WorkSafeBC requires before removal starts, and hand you the reports a building permit may ask for.
-
Certified asbestos testing
Samples from every material your renovation will touch go to an accredited lab. Our testing is certified, and you get the results in writing.
-
Removal
The work area is sealed with plastic and kept under negative air, so dust can't reach the rest of the house. Material is kept wet, removed carefully and bagged as it comes down.
-
Site swept
Every surface HEPA-vacuumed and wiped down. Waste is double-bagged, sealed and taken to a disposal site approved to accept it.
-
Walk-through
Once the area passes its final check, the plastic comes down and we walk it with you, then hand over the test results and the paperwork for your file.
-
Cleared
Safe to renovate. The rest of the job goes ahead on schedule.
Where it hides
You can't see it. A lab can.
In older Victoria homes these are the usual suspects. Leave them alone until they've been tested.
Popcorn ceilings
Sprayed-on ceiling texture in older homes often contains asbestos.
Drywall mud
Joint compound on older drywall can contain it, even where the drywall itself doesn't.
Vinyl floors and glue
Old sheet vinyl, floor tiles and the black adhesive underneath them.
Duct and pipe wrap
Tape and paper wrap on older heating ducts and hot water pipes.
Stucco and cement siding
Some older exterior finishes were made with asbestos to help them last.
Vermiculite insulation
Loose, pebbly, grey-brown insulation in attics and walls.
Pross Renovations, since 1999
They did an excellent job and left the site clean and with everything in good order.
Questions
Asbestos questions, answered straight.
Do I need to leave my home during removal?
Usually not for smaller jobs. We seal the work area with plastic and run negative air machines that filter the air, so the rest of the house stays in use. For bigger jobs, or work near the furnace ducts or your only bathroom, we may ask you to stay elsewhere for part of it. You'll know which before we start.
How long does testing take?
Taking the samples usually takes under an hour. Lab results typically come back within a few business days, and faster results can often be arranged if your renovation is waiting on them.
Is asbestos removal covered by insurance?
Usually not on its own. Most home insurance won't pay to remove asbestos that's simply there. If it's disturbed as part of a covered claim, such as water or fire damage, the removal may be part of that claim. Check with your insurer, and we'll give you the test results and a written scope they can review.
Does my house need testing?
If it was built before 1990 and the work will disturb walls, ceilings, floors or ducts, test first. There's no way to tell asbestos apart by looking at it.
What happens to the asbestos after it's removed?
It's kept wet, double-bagged, sealed, labelled and taken to a disposal site that's approved to accept it. You get the paperwork for your file.
